Azamara Journey Cruise Ship: Review, Photos & Departure Ports on Cruise Critic

The ship had a perfect position in Monte Carlo to capitalize on views. My favorite ports, however, were the smaller ones, like Zadar and Sibenik in Croatia. I was unfamiliar with both cities, but quickly fell in love with their Old Towns, seafront promenades, and the welcoming people who were eager to ask about our ship and itinerary. In Italy, the southern city of Brindisi was my favorite stop, since it was a new destination for me. In all three cities, I chose to wander on my own, and the onboard concierge always had a convenient map with directions on how to best explore each place. Describe the cabins This is an older vessel, and it’s hard to fix the “bones” of a ship, even with a remodel.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

However, one of the most frequent and popular onboard pastimes is trivia. There are multiple rounds offered each day, and they focus on subjects that are often tied to the destinations the ships visit. (Think Greek gods and goddesses or ABBA on Greek Isles itineraries.) Each person receives a grid sheet for stamps, with one stamp given for simply participating and two stamps given to the members of the winning team for each round. At the end of the sailing, passengers tally their stamps to collect Azamara logo prizes. The line's ships each have one main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant, that allows passengers to dine at any time during set hours for complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner. The waiter-served menu there changes daily, and you should plan on spending at least 90 minutes for dinner, especially if you're having dessert.

Is this your company?

Previously a self-serve eatery, thanks to the pandemic passengers now simply point to what they would like and a crew member doles it out. For dinner, cruisers are seated and given menus -- which change nightly to highlight differing cuisines, such as Mexican, German and Greek -- and order from a waiter. Although it's sit-down table service, it's still faster than the main dining room.

Royal Caribbean

We did have an AzAmazing evening opera performance in a historical coastal fortification that lived up to the marketing promise; but, I wouldn’t stand in line to do it again. We also had an onboard White Night party on the pool deck that included local musicians, a buffet, performances from the ship’s troupe, and a parade of the onboard crew. It delivered on the promise of a White Night pool deck party and was something different. In addition to the live entertainment, Azamara has a television in each guest room. Unfortunately, the TV is limited to one movie each day that runs in a loop. Similarly, there is one TV series that runs in a continual loop each day. Too bad.I mentioned that we booked an Ocean Suite which included complimentary specialty dining.

As a result, cabins can seem compact, but there is still enough space for a sofa and desk in the corner. Beds are really comfortable with cushioned mattresses, plump pillows, and a duvet. The ship has inside cabins, standard window cabins facing outward, some with balconies, and several suite categories. Food onboard is wonderful, with diverse menus that have an international flair and can accommodate a range of tastes and dietary needs. The Windows Cafe offers simple yet tasty fare, with themed dinners every night, freshly squeezed juice at breakfast, and a changing selection of multiple flavours of gelato for lunch and dinner.

The ship offers Azamara’s Signature Shows, which features Broadway hits, dancers, and guest performers. A cocktail pianist plays live music in The Den and a quartet plays live music daily in the Living Room. Most cruise lines have their own cobranded credit cards, but unfortunately, Azamara is no longer one of them. Passengers used to be able to use cobranded Celebrity Cruises or Royal Caribbean International credit cards to book Azamara voyages, but it's unclear whether that is still possible, given Azamara's split from Royal Caribbean Group. Azamara's loyalty program, Azamara Circle, has five tiers for passengers to reach, based on the number of points they earn each time they sail. With each new tier, they unlock additional benefits, such as free Wi-Fi minutes, complimentary laundry service and discounts on spa treatments and future cruise bookings.

We saw several families with children on our summer cruise who were making the best of what was on offer. However, overall, Azamara Quest isn't well suited to those travelling with kids. The pool deck, spa area and Windows Cafe are located on Deck 9. For a light bite on a sunny day, The Patio dishes up burgers, kebabs, hot dogs and soft serve yoghurts. The Sunset Bar is located on the aft end of this deck and comes with wraparound ocean views.

Deck 5 houses the bulk of the public areas including the theatre, bars and shops, Mosaic Cafe and the ships main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. On this deck, you'll also find The Den with comfortable seating and Spirits, the adjoining piano bar with its large lounge area. Passengers will each link a credit card to their onboard account (or put up a set amount of cash), as all onboard charges are cashless. The room key each cruiser is issued at embarkation serves as a room key, charge card and ID card when disembarking and reboarding the ship in port. Generally, Azamara's vessels are nonsmoking, except for clearly designated areas on the forward port (left, when facing the front of the ship) side of the pool deck. Passengers are not permitted to smoke in other public areas or in their cabins, including on their balconies.

We just finished our first cruise with Azamara Onward - a 12-night cruise along the northern Mediterian and eastern Adriatic. Prior to booking, we heard so many wonderful things about Azamare and its onboard service that we were looking forward to experiencing it for ourselves. We might have been expecting too much.My wife and I are pretty experienced cruisers.

Buffet lunches are available, though a la carte options can be ordered at the Patio restaurant, which is part of the Windows Cafe. Lunch offerings don’t vary much from day to day, but the menu usually has sandwiches and wraps, salads, and some hot entrees. The a la carte menu at Discoveries does vary from day to day and is typically inspired by the various destinations the ship visits. Cabins are typically made for two people yet vary in size, ranging from 158 square feet to 603 square feet. Overall, the cabins are relatively small, which is the ship’s biggest drawback. Most rooms are outfitted with a queen bed that can be converted into two separate twin beds for a single person.

REVIEW: Life onboard the new 'Azamazing' Azamara Onward - Cruise Passenger

The immersive experience, which takes place on land, is a memorable experience of local entertainment and traditional performances available to all passengers. In addition to this fun-filled event, many guests look forward to the White Night (everyone is encouraged to dress in all white). It revolves around live performances from all the performers onboard, and the massive buffet that goes until late helps fuel the party.

We started researching and saw this has happened to others, too. If this has happened to you, I would encourage you to also file a report with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. At least maybe those of us who have been treated this way can save others from the same fate.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking. With Azamara, you can expect visits to interesting ports, more time on shore, and complimentary experiences that are hard to recreate yourself, like the AzAmazing Evening I had in an old fort near Rome. If you have been wanting to try a small-ship cruise, but prefer not to pay the hefty prices of the bigger luxury names, this is a great stepping stone that bridges the gap between mainstream and upscale cruising.

On the other hand, dinner menus change daily and are dependent on the destination and chef. Dietary restrictions are accommodated at each meal as long as you inform your server in advance. The main dining room—where passengers enjoy the breakfast and lunch and daily dinner menu—are included in the cruise fare.

The petite bathrooms are functional, with shelf space and plenty of towels; the showers, however, are small, and the curtains feel a bit “old school.” I found the water pressure to be excellent though. Bare feet, vest tops, caps, swimwear, shorts, and ripped jeans aren’t permitted in the main dining room or specialty restaurants. Dinner tends to be a dressier affair with suits and long dresses and heels the norm. All meals are held in two main restaurants, Discoveries and Windows Cafe. Light snacks can be enjoyed at Mosaic Cafe and Mosaic @Night. Breakfast is typically buffet-style at Windows Cafe with fresh fruit, cheeses and charcuterie, baked goods, pancakes, and a few different egg options.

Ultimately they backed off and agreed to refund the money. But, I would double-check everything and look for unsupported costs. Anything we missed Azamara offers several special events on every cruise that are complimentary for all guests. For the AzAmazing Evening, every passenger receives an invitation to a special event on shore; on my sailing, we attended an outdoor opera and aperitif tasting in an Italian fort near Rome. There is also a White Night buffet on the pool deck with all kinds of food stations and live music.
